The hot weather makes it difficult to stay cool at home. There are a few things you can to lower the temperature without resorting to air conditioning.
Temperatures are beginning to soar, and it’s time to think about how you’re going to stay cool at home this summer without your bills going through the roof. There are quite a few ways to cool your house down without air conditioning and do your bit for the environment too.
Making the most of fans
If you’re using fans, make the most of them by ensuring they’re in the right position. Some people swear by having them in the window to blow cool air in and get warm air out. Another idea is to put a bucket of ice in front of them so it blows icy cool air around your home instead of redistributing warm air – as fans don’t actually cool the air.
Cool down with ice
Ice is also a great replacement for your winter hot water bottle. Fill empty bottles and put them in the freezer for several hours. When you’re too hot, pull them out and wrap a towel around them before putting them behind your neck or back, or taking one to bed with you!
Keep the heat out to begin with
As with many things, prevention is better than cure. During the day when the sun’s high, pull your curtains or blinds closed to keep out as much heat as possible. You’ll have a much easier job cooling down this way.
